The Disease

General Information

Measles is a highly contagious respiratory infection where 90% of people (an estimate 10 to 20 people) around the first infected person are likely to become infected as well. Not only is the disease highly contagious due to its transmissibility, it can also be highly fatal with 40% of those infected suffering complications in a long period of time. The first sign of infection is usually a high fever that occur after 10 to 12 days, followed by flu-like symptoms and occurrence of small white spots inside the cheeks. After that, rash spreads around the whole body lasting for around 6 days before fading away. In more serious cases, symptoms such as diarrhea, middle ear infection and pneumonia may occur. Seizure, blindness or inflammation of the brain may also happen.

Treatments

Infected individuals should consult a doctor for the first line of treatment. Due to its high transmissibility, early detection is crucial to limit the exposure of the infected person to others. While there is not specific antiviral treatment available for measles yet, measles vaccines are available and prove to be effective in reducing the number of measles cases. From 2000 to 2017, the number of deaths caused my measles decreased by 80% due to widespread administration of measles vaccine. For treatment, doctors may recommend several steps to help ease the disease and aid in recovery, such as fever reducing medications, staying well-rest to boost immune system, intaking plenty of fluids, using a humidifies to ease sore throat and cough, and administering vitamin A supplements.
